What is Corning Gorilla Glass?

Gorilla Glass, a chemically toughened, hardened, or strengthened glass, is being used on numerous smartphones, wearables, and laptops globally. The company behind this Glass is called Corning.

Over the years, Corning has made each iteration of their Gorilla Glass thinner, lighter and tougher.

See, it is not easy to have a glass that is scratch-resistant and at the same time shatterproof.

Why? Because for a Glass to be scratch resistant, it will have to be softer and that will make it vulnerable to drops or not shatterproof. Also, to be drop resistant, it will have to be tougher but that makes it vulnerable to scratches.

Gorilla Glass being able to find the middle ground between these two protection scenarios is why it is the industry standard.

The latest version of Gorilla Glass is Victus and the first Samsung phone to use it was the Samsung Note 20 Ultra followed by Galaxy S21 Series; The standard S21, S21 Plus, and the S21 Ultra. The version before that was the Gorilla Glass 6 and the S20 series was the first to use it.

Though the Victus+ version was first used on the S22 series launched in February of 2022.

Gorilla Glass Victus is stronger, thinner, and lighter than the previous generation for sure but wasn’t able to totally live up to the promise of the manufacturer of being shatterproof up to 2 meters but close.

Some Samsung phones have implementations on just the front/display while the flagships have both front and back gorilla glass protection.

Final Thought

Samsung phones with gorilla glass don’t mean that your devices won’t shatter when dropped or won’t scratch when it comes in contact with sharp objects.

It means it will take it falling from a higher altitude or in frequent contact with sharp objects for that to happen.

You can always go for an additional layer of protection such as case and tempered glass. But nothing will ever be like the careful handling of your device.

As you must have noticed, only their flagship phones have gorilla glass protection on both the front and back. This is not true for other manufacturers such as Xiaomi. I will like to see front and back protection on their mid-range phones too.
